The heart of the centre of Madrid, known as the Centro district, is a bustling, exciting and busy maze of medieval streets, classic buildings, shops and restaurants. Right at the very heart of the city is the Gran Vía, considered one of the best places for shopping in Madrid, where you can find high street brands like H&M, Mango and Zara, as well as boutique Spanish labels. A tourist highlight of the Centro Area is the magnificent Plaza Mayor, which is a huge enclosed market square that dates back to the 1400s, and has been added to and restored over the centuries by successive royal dynasties. The whole neighbourhood is popular with tourists, with famous sites and places of historical interest spread throughout the neighbourhood. The stunning Palacio Real de Madrid, a former Royal residence, sits at the western end of the district and is always worth a look to see the fine art, intricate architecture and stunning views.
Being the centre of the capital city of Spain, a nation that is known around the world for its food, the Centro neighbourhood is unsurprisingly a treat for foodies, with restaurants, tapas bars and food markets on every street. La Primera sits on the Calle Gran Via and since opening in 2016 has quickly become a favourite of both locals and tourists alike. This amazing seafood restaurant mixes sophisticated dining with a cosy and friendly atmosphere. La Terraza del Casino, meanwhile, is one of the top fine dining restaurants in the city, with two Michelin stars. Here you can enjoy an award-winning menu of gourmet delicacies in the surroundings of a private members club. Located in an old brick tunnel beneath the Plaza Mayor, Restaurante D'Corazon is an unusual place to spend an evening but you’ll always be treated to a delicious menu of Spanish favourites in a cosy and friendly environment. The legendary Botín holds the world record for being the oldest restaurant in the world, having opened its doors in 1725. The menu includes very traditional Spanish feast dishes such as roast suckling pig. Finally, for a place to sample the food and drink of Madrid whilst you’re out and about, make sure you pass through the Mercado San Miguel. This stunning covered food market is the place to go to sample Iberian ham, oysters, tapas dishes and much, much more.
History lovers might fancy a beer at the brilliant Casa Labra; one of the most historically significant bars in Madrid. The 1950s decor might seem retro but the bar’s history goes back further than that, as it was the birthplace of the Spanish Socialist Party in 1879. Be sure to grab a high table on the outdoor terrace. Just a few minutes’ walks from Plaza Mayor is one of Madrid’s coolest bars. Sala Equis may not look like much from the outside, but this former adult film cinema has been transformed into an uber-trendy bar, with comfortable seating, a great range of drinks and a large screen showing a mix of old black and white movies and cult classics. Finally, for a place to sample the food and drink of Madrid whilst you’re out and about, make sure you pass through the Mercado San Miguel. This stunning covered food market.
Don't miss visiting The Cibeles, and Park El Retiro.
The nearest grocery store is located only two minutes away on the same street of the flat, on Augusto Figueroa street, and you will find everything you need for a comfortable stay away from home. ATMs, shops and pharmacies are within easy access, as the area is very well serviced. We recommend Farmacia San Anton, which is a minute away, and the Hospital Universitario Madrid, which is an 8 minutes drive in a taxi.
The area is well known for great restaurants, and Tepic is a good option to start your exploration of the food scene. The restaurant offers a modern twist on Mexican dishes, with the tacos being the speciality. Ex Libris offers a more formal yet fun menu of international cuisine and Diurno is a film-rental cafe that does some of the best lunches and sandwiches in the area. For an evening drink, you will be spoilt for choice in Chueca. Ángel Sierra is a perfect meeting place for a drink and a tapas dish but be warned, only double pints are served after midnight. El Tigre is without a doubt the most popular drinking spot in the neighbourhood, with queues to get in a very crowded feeling once you’re inside, though they do serve excellent free tapas while you drink which may help explain its extreme popularity. For late night fun, try Truco (located close to the Chueca metro station), which is known as one of the best gay bars in the city, particularly popular with the young lesbian crowd, though gay men and straight customers are welcome. My recommendations:- Tepic -Mexican dishes / tacos main speciality - Ex Libris - International cuisine - Diurno - best sandwiches in the area - Ángel Sierra - try the tasty tapas - El Tigre - most famous drinking spot
The nearest subway is the Plaza de Chueca metro, but there are buses and subway court 5 minutes away.
